Here are some art technique ideas using markers & water, texture rubbing, and oil pastel to create these beautiful fish with feelings. This lesson is also a great way to use social and emotional learning in the art classroom. Students will learn how to turn emotions into art using the Fish with Feelings drawing pages. This lesson also provides some opportunities for students to do some writing.
Marker and Water Art Technique
The book Happy
by Miles Van Hout makes a great introduction to this lesson.
Crayola Washable Markers
work best for this technique because they bleed more than the other brands I tested.
Art Technique: Markers, Colored Pencils, Texture Rubbing
I’m using woodless colored pencils for the texture rubbing.
You can also make your own texture rubbing plates.
Here are the Googly Eyes
I used. They are so much fun!
Oil Pastel and Glue Art Technique
I used Crayola Oil Pastels
for this example.

No matter which technique you choose, students will love making the Fish with Feelings and sharing about some emotions through their art. The easy fish drawing pages are just right for elementary students.

Social & Emotional Learning in Art
Remind yourself and others of the social and emotional benefits of art. This is a great graphic to include in parent newsletters or display in your room.
