How to Doodle for Beginners

How to Doodle

I’m not one of those people who can make doodles come out of my arm like a stream of consciousness. I wish I was, but that’s also a good thing. Because, by teaching myself how to doodle, I can also show you how to teach your students how to doodle. It’s all about breaking it into parts and of course practice. With practice, you and students will have certain motifs that they memorize and can add to their doodles without a lot of thought. But that comes later.

I kind of feel like I “cracked the doodle code” with these steps! I hope you will be as excited as I was to give doodling a try!

Draw Your Favorite Things

First, start your doodle by drawing your favorite things or the object you want to use to tell a story. I got step-by-step instructions from my drawing set, Roll A Winter Doodle • Easy Doodle Drawing for Kids In the set you will find 48 winter ideas to add the objects and 6 doodles broken down into steps.

Be sure to watch the video at the end of this post so you can see how to draw all 9 objects in this doodle.

doodle step 1 - draw your favorite things

Add a Cloud to Connect Things

Next, draw a cloud shape that touches or goes behind most objects or (at least the objects that are on the edge of the drawing). Add a few big spirals or more cloud shapes so that the drawing is broken into sections. This will make it easier to add doodle lines later.

Add Doodles

After adding the cloud shape and a few big spirals, add doodles to fill in the gaps and around the edges.

Remember, you can get step-by-step instructions on how to make these doodles with Roll A Winter Doodle • Easy Doodle Drawing for Kids.

Use a Thick Line

Once you are finished with your drawing, use a thick line over the edges of the main objects. The think outline will make them stand out more and give your drawing more contrast and definition.

Add Shading

As a finishing touch, add shading to make your doodle look more 3 dimensional. In my example, I used just blue and purple to add shading. For this winter doodle, I think the blue and purple make it feel even colder!

Add color to the objects to brighten things up.

Watch This Doodle on Youtube

Use this infographic to display in your room or share with parents, administrators, or other teachers as a way to point out some of the academic benefits of learning to draw. While they are not the only reason for using drawing as part of a balanced curriculum, they are certainly worthy of celebrating and may help you advocate for including drawing as part of your art or classroom learning experiences.
