See the art techniques that make these hearts really pop!
For the following demonstration, I used coloring sheets from my Op Art Hearts Coloring Pages. If you’d like the instructions for drawing your own hearts the Op Art Hearts has step-by-step instructions and includes the coloring pages and writing lesson.
Op Art Heart Technqiue Ideas
For this lesson, I created contrast by using a dark purple marker next to light green. I made the light green by coloring with a green and blue gel crayon, then going over the crayon with water.
This example, using the heart target design, uses marker, colored pencil and a texture rubbing plate.
This op art heart has a texture rubbing in each square with a marker outline to crisp edges. In addition, there is shading around the heart to make it look 3-dimensional. I achieved the shading by adding a different texture rubbing with purple and green.
Notice the contrast created by using the darkness of a red gel crayon against the light green texture rubbing. The heart really pops in this example, thanks to the shading around the edge of the heart.
I used shading to make the heart stand out from the background. As a result, notice the two different textures layered on top of each other to create a darker background.
