Abstract Art Roll & Draw

Do you want to teach abstract art, but are not sure where to begin?  With the roll of the dice, your students will have the inspiration to create unique abstract masterpieces!

This versatile set of roll & draw pages can be used a number of ways and can fit into both traditional art classrooms and choice based, or studio based art rooms.

The basis for this lesson is that students will roll the dice to select one each of the circle, dot, straight line, curved line and angled line to add to their paper.  All of the lines and shapes will intersect and create and abstract work of art.  They will also add a texture and pattern from the texture and pattern idea pages, (or roll & draw pages) then add color.   There are several variations on how students go about adding textures, patterns, and colors.  I’ve spelled out several of my ideas, but I’m sure you’ll find other ways to use them as well.  There are 5 completely different roll & draw pages, so you are sure to have one-of-a-kind art, even if you have a large class.

The elements that the students add to their picture are based on the “5 elements of shape” taught by Mona Brooks in her book, Drawing with Children.  So if you’ve introduced your students to the 5 elements of shape, this is a superb follow-up activity.  It gives your students a chance to try using the 5 elements of shape in a non-threatening way.  Even if you are not familiar with the book, the elements of circle, dots, curved line, angled lines, and straight lines are simple and easy to draw.  No explanation about them is necessary, it’s just a bonus if you are trying to teach them already.  I’ve included a definition card for each of the elements for your word wall, or bulletin board.
