PDF Presentation, “Op Art Using Contrasting Colors”

The”Op Art Using Contrasting Colors” presentation looks at how contrasting colors are used in real life situations to get your attention.  Using the grocery store as an example, apples, carrots, and potatoes are used to show how packaging and display surfaces can help those produce appear brighter. The last half of the presentation gives some cautionary examples of how value is also an important element in combining typography and background colors.

“Contrasting Colors” lesson

The “Contrasting Colors” lessons give students a chance to create some color wheels and value scales as a way to remember and reference the information in the presentation.  There is a pre-assessment that can be given to student beforehand, to demonstrate new learning, once the lesson is over.  There is also a label that students will fill out at the end of the worksheets, where they will pick 2 contrasting colors and describe why they are contrasting.  This will not only serve as a post-assessment, but the label can also be used for the any of the op art lessons in this packet.

PDF Presentation: “Op Art Using Positive and Negative Shapes”

The “Op Art Using Positive and Negative Shapes” presentation starts out by looking at how “illusory contours” are created when positive and negative shapes line up just right.  Next, the presentation looks at different variations of contrasting colors to inspire your students with their color choices.

“Op Art Using Positive and Negative Shapes” lesson

The 6 Op art Lessons are Negative Positive Hands, Negative Positive Hearts, Moving Targets, Starburst Letters, Tunnel Letters and Wave Letters.   The illustrated instructions will give you the materials needed, the vocab words and the step-by-step instructions along with some tips.  I’ve included a two-page list of vocabulary words along with kid-friendly definitions. Each lesson has a label and rubric included so that your projects will be assessed and ready to hang quicker.
