✔︎ Photo references with grid overlays promote observational drawing, not just copying
✔︎ Three progressive steps build confidence: basic shapes, major curves, and final details
✔︎ Optional shading practice adds depth, realism, and art vocabulary
✔︎ Flexible format works for warm-ups, sketchbooks, sub plans, early finishers, or art centers
★ What’s Included (34 Pages)
✔︎ 9 step-by-step photo reference pages (each with 3 drawing steps + optional shading)
✔︎ 9 detailed close-ups (eye, ear, muzzle, hooves) for observational practice
✔︎ 9 traditional grid drawing pages (blank + labeled grid versions)
✔︎ 3 Drawing Pages designed to be cut in half or quarters
✔︎ Script for student instructions for both drawing approaches (2 pages)
✔︎ Teacher directions and tips for classroom use (2 pages)
★ How It Works
This lesson uses two complementary methods to teach students how to draw a horse—a blended grid + guided drawing technique and a traditional square-by-square approach.
Blended Grid + Step-by-Step Drawing:
✔︎ Students start by observing a photo overlaid with a grid
✔︎ Step 1: Add basic shapes using the grid to guide size and placement
✔︎ Step 2: Refine with curved lines to form the horse’s silhouette
✔︎ Step 3: Erase guidelines and add final details
✔︎ Optional Step 4: Use the value scale to practice shading in circles, then add value to the drawing
Traditional Grid Drawing Pages:
✔︎ Students copy each square of a line drawing into a blank grid
✔︎ Works like a puzzle—one square at a time
✔︎ Encourages observation of contour, line direction, and proportion
★ FAQs
What grade level is this for?
Best for upper elementary, middle school, and beginning high school. Easily adaptable by grade with differentiated expectations.
Can I use this for sub plans?
Absolutely. The visual directions and structured approach make it ideal for independent or sub use.
Is shading required?
No. Shading is an optional Step 4. You can stop after Step 3 for a clean line drawing or use it as part of another project, like painting or collage.
Do students draw directly on the photo pages?
No. Drawing happens on the blank grid pages. Value scale and practice circles are provided separately for clean copies.
However, there is space on the more traditional grid drawing pages with line drawings of horses for students to make their drawings.
